Usually I like Refinery 29 and their content definitely entertains me/is a time killer until I scroll somewhere else but this piece kinda grated on me.
For somebody who has just moved from wearing everyday literally no less than: concealer, foundation, contouring, bronzer, mascara and eyebrow pomade to just the last two components, to see other people going make up free is totally inspiring.
In fact, seeing a beautiful girl at work who didn't have the best skin but didn't wear makeup was totally my inspiration to not wear it. I thought, she's going to work, she's killing her job, and from an outsider's perspective she didn't let her skin get in the way of that. She also happened to have a super good looking boyfriend too - so obviously it didn't bother him either.
Alicia Keys IS an inspiration - not just through her music or her general presence within the entertainment industry. I've always seen her as a very empowering female and always had a lot of respect for her.
Now, she doesn't wear make up and she killed it on the red carpet at the VMA's, in the video for In Common plus many other appearances and I hope that young girls and boys who are exposed to the ocean of instagram make up tutorials and have the likes of the Jenners and Kardashians all over the press and media, they absolutely need a natural icon who they can look up to.
You go A.K - you keep doing your thing and Refinery 29: if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all.
From an inspired make-up free gal.
